HISTORICAL SCIENCE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL HISTORIOGRAPHY AND POSTMODERN CRITICISM IN THE LIGHT OF SEVERAL WORKS OF HISTORIANS FROM BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA AND CROATIA

In the first part of the paper, by using relevant literature, the author offers an overview of the development of historiography from antiquity to the end of the 20th century, presenting the basic characteristics of historical thought, epistemological guidelines and applied methodological practices in ancient historiography, historiography in the Middle Ages and historiography in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In the second part of the paper, the author describes postmodernist historiographical concepts, compares them with the basic principles of traditional historiography, and based on the views of professional historians, points to possible traces of development of a new methodology of historical science in the context of postmodernism.

DETERMINATENESS AS THE BASIS OF THE DEFINITION OF BEING

The article posits the definition of being as determinateness, which also includes several synonymous notions. The article demonstrates that the definition herein resists the critique brought upon it by analytic philosophy (verifiability and falsifiability of the definition of being), that the definition is primordial (it cannot be constituted by other definitions), that a property that constitutes the notion of being is necessary, that the definition is meaningful (exactly due to the existence of the mentioned property, contrary to the serious accusations of meaninglessness of the notion of being throughout the history of philosophy) and, finally, that the definition encompasses everything that exists (without some transcendent ‘residue’).

ATTITUDE OF POLITICAL ELITES TOWARDS PROTEST POLICIES AND VIOLENCE

The topic of the paper refers to the influence of political elites on violence and their reaction to it. The emphasis of the paper is focused on the problems that arose during the regime changes, then the territorial questionability or independence of the state, which to a large extent represented a challenging test of the political elite’s abilities. The monitoring period is the period after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the regime change and the wave of democratization that followed around the countries of Eastern and Central Europe, that is, the period from 1989 to 1992. Also, in that time span, the SFRY ceased to exist in its previously recognized territorial integrity. The observed period of the fall of the communist regime and its collapse will be analyzed through various methodological approaches in the countries of Czechoslovakia and Romania. The paper also follows the disintegration of the state of SFR Yugoslavia, which first produced a conflict and later a civil war among its inhabitants. The starting point that warned the population of the above-mentioned changes are the protest activities which, with their organization, dynamics and functionality, provoked the reaction of the political elites at that time. Based on empirical data and a profound study of the theoretical approach to the actions of political elites, the author tries to explain whether the political elites in the indicated circumstances and also under different circumstances can become the causes of violence or their reactions can foster violence. Furthermore, in an illustrative conceptual format, using various research methods, the author seeks to illuminate and provide an objective account of the roles of political elites and their contribution to all that happened during the past events between these countries, perceived from today’s time distance.

A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF SOCIAL INEQUALITIES IN YUGOSLAVIA DURING THE 1960S − A LETTER FROM WORKER ŽIVKO PAVLOVIĆ TO THE PRESIDENT TITO IN 1967

The paper discusses the extent of social inequalities in Yugoslavia in the 1960s on the basis of archival material and relevant literature. This process is quite visible in the example of the Yugoslav working class. Later, in the form of an appendix, we publish a letter from a worker from Beočin, Živko Pavlović, to President Tito, sent in 1967 on the occasion of Tito’s visit to Kosovo and Metohija. The letter addressed the problems of the society and of the firm where Pavlović was employed.

The monograph Kingdom of Serbia 1718–1739, published by the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Niš, is a revised and supplemented doctoral dissertation, defended on September 24, 2013 at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Niš. The work is a synthesis of historical events of 1718–1739. years in the Kingdom of Serbia. It represents a lasting contribution to historiography and, equally, an incentive for further research. Each issue covered, or at least touched upon in the study, can be the subject of special research. To that extent, the task of the author to shape such a complex topic into a coherent whole was more demanding.
